Remembering “Shaalu” : Our pet cat

I don’t even know whether it makes sense to write about it, but this is the only thing I can do now.

My pet cat, “Shaalu” back at my hometown in Kerala, died today while saving her children from an attack by a bunch of stray dogs.

She was the most intelligent, beautiful and affectionate cat we ever had at our home, and her death brings so much sorrow to our lives. She walked into our home almost 2 years ago, a stray kitten then, and never left. She has given birth to 3 generations of kitten during her stay at our home.

The memories and time spend with Shaalu will always be with us…

The way Shaalu lived her life, the daily routine she followed, the tricks she taught her to kittens and her intelligence, all made us wonder whether she is a Cat or a Human being!

She had razor-sharp ears that , the sound made with the knife used to cut fish, will make her run to the kitchen within seconds if she is anywhere near the home.  She likes grated coconut so much that,  again, when my mom takes the coconut grater, Shaalu has learned to understand the sound made and comes running to the kitchen. She has also learned to identify sound of the container which keeps salt (used to cut fish). Just imagine, there are dozens of containers at the kitchen opened daily,  but Shaalu responds to the lid opening sound of container having salt!

Recently we started giving her milk at night before she sleeps, and always milk is taken out of fridge. She has learned to come to kitchen if she is anywhere else, when fridge door is opened ONLY AT NIGHT realizing that its time for her daily milk treat!

Every night, at around 10 PM, when my dad switches on Radio to listen to songs, Shaalu will come to his bedroom, lie down on the carpet and enjoy the songs until radio is switched off. Once Radio is off, she will go back to the kitchen where she usually sleeps.

It was just few days ago, Shaalu taught all the 3 kittens how to climb trees and even how to get inside our home, through the terrace if doors are closed. The way she teaches her kitten how to hunt for small insects, the way she plays with her kitten..All those memories are always here to stay.

And today, finally, she sacrificed her own life in her successful attempt to protect her kids. And the final lesson she taught the kids came to their rescue..by climbing trees while Shaalu was fighting the dogs.

Let her soul rest in peace..

Here are few pictures of Shaalu and her kids

Thank you for reading.

  1. What a beautiful tribute to her… she was fortunate to have walked into your home, and it is obvious that she brought love there. How courageous Shaalu was. I’m sorry she is gone.
